Toronto
26. September 1989
Toronto is Canada's largest and economically most powerful city. Like Frankfurt, it has an impressive skyline and, in conjunction with New York, is considered to be the centre of the North American financial world. Multiple waves of immigration from all parts of the world have turned Toronto, like Frankfurt, into an internationally diverse urban community.
Visits by professionals and specialists have strengthened the relations between our cities. The themes of these have included smart city concepts and the greening of buildings. Joint cultural projects, such as photo exhibitions, street art, etc., have served as the launch-pad for further exchanges. There has also been a student exchange in the form of a project week on urban planning between the two partner schools (Carl-Schurz-Schule Frankfurt and the High School University of Toronto Schools) and the NGO Maximum City.
City partnership Frankfurt – Toronto brings one more artistic attraction
A painted eagle and a raccoon greet passengers at the Frankfurt “Festhalle / Messe” underground station.
The impressive mural is a work recently delivered by Alexandar Lazich (Bacon) from Frankfurt's sister city Toronto in Canada. It is part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the city friendship and an exchange of street-art started in 2019. The Frankfurt artist Justus Becker (cor) before created the counterpart in Toronto with a 6-story tall graffito in public space.
Bacon's design for Frankfurt quotes the city of Toronto's motto “Diversity our Strength” and the European motto “United in diversity”.
Bacon has depicted two heraldic animals representing the two twin cities: the eagle for Frankfurt, the raccoon for Toronto. The project was realised in cooperation between VGF / VerkehrsGesellschaft Frankfurt am Main mbH, the city of Frankfurt am Main, the Goethe Institute Toronto and Toronto Streetart.
