English Theatre
The English Theatre is the largest English-speaking theatre on the European continent, and its widely diversified repertoire makes it one of the highlights of Frankfurt’s cultural scene. Since its establishment in 1979, the theatre has provided surprises every season with its varied mixture of classic and contemporary theatrical pieces, dramas and comedy acts, thrillers, satires and musicals. The selection of plays is oriented toward the world stage. Most of the performers come directly from England or other English-speaking countries. For each production an ensemble is put together in London. There, a stage manager organises rehearsals on site. They are ended in Frankfurt shortly before the premiere. In this way, the English Theatre is able to offer English-speaking entertainment at its best.
The theatre’s residence, with 300 seats, is located on the ground floor of Commerzbank’s multi-storey Gallileo building, in Gallusanlage 7 in Frankfurt’s Bahnhof quarter. A friendly and relaxed mood prevails in the theatre. The distance to the stage is small, the acoustics are excellent and the performers are very committed. The English Theatre’s James Bar offers snacks and drinks. The bar also hosts readings, live music programmes and small-scale theatre performances by the drama club. In addition, the English Theatre also offers a matinee programme where the language is tailoured to be understood by adolescents and school children, which makes it ideally suited to visits by school classes. Anyone who has some competence in the English language will enjoy this atmosphere.
