Leipzig went down in history as the heroic centre of the peaceful revolution of 1989. Leipzig is a commercial hub and trade fair city with a rich tradition; it is also considered a centre of the fine arts. J.S. Bach and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy wrote music history here. Its world-famous buildings include the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Auerbachs Keller, the setting of a number of scenes from J.W. Goethe's magnum opus "Faust".

Leipzig and Frankfurt signed their City Friendship Treaty on the day of German unification. The city friendship represents a bridge between the two states that were separated after the Second World War. Together, our cities have organised and supported various exhibitions and discussion events on the topic of reunification.
