Granada was founded by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. Bordering Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in the country, the city is located in the densely populated western part of Nicaragua. Non-governmental groups were instrumental in setting up the city partnership.

Frankfurt supports the projects of various local non-profit organisations in Granada. A three-year series of training sessions run by the Frankfurt fire service in cooperation with the Granada fire brigade served to improve disaster management and emergency care training in the city. Frankfurt also provides equipment and facilities.
