Pathways to healthcare
The Clearing center
The Clearing Center of the health department
It should be a given in Germany, but not everyone has sufficient access to the medical care they need. It is estimated that between 500,000 and 1 million people nationwide have no health insurance cover. This makes it difficult for them to access the standard healthcare system. Any treatment costs must be paid for by the people without health insurance cover themselves, which is not possible for the majority of those affected.
In Frankfurt, people seeking advice can find help at the health department‘s Clearing center. It is a contact point for all people with no or unclear health insurance status.
The councellors help to clarify insurance cover and provide support with the realization of claims, for example regarding contribution debts. The counsellors at the Clearing Center will also try to work out ways of accessing healthcare.
The Clearing Center advises people:
- who have no health insurance.
- who do not know whether they have health insurance.
- who have problems with their health insurance (e.g. owed contributions). • who are not insured and need to see a doctor.
- who have questions about the German social and healthcare system.
