Water fun for young and old: City of Frankfurt opens water playgrounds
Head of Climate and Environment, Tina Zapf-Rodríguez, has opened this year’s water play season.

On Friday, May 30, the Head of Department, together with representatives of the Parks Department (“Grünflächenamt”), turned on the water in Niddapark – on behalf of all the water playgrounds in the city. The play areas are available to everyone free of charge. The lawns, playgrounds and football areas surrounding the water play facilities invite young and old to experience, explore and relax.
The water playgrounds are switched on as soon as the temperature reaches 24 degrees Celsius and temperatures are expected to remain constant in the following days.
There are seven water playgrounds in the city. These are:
- Scheerwald Tannenwald
- Louisa
- Schwanheim
- Günthersburgpark
- Niddapark
- Lohrpark (paddling pool)
All water playgrounds are now in operation with the exception of Günthersburgspark – repairs are still required, but these should be completed soon.
The water playground at the Goetheturm forest play park has been converted into a mud playground, which is in daily operation from spring to autumn.
Animals are not permitted.
When are the water playgrounds in operation?
During the season from mid-May to mid-September, the water playgrounds are in operation every day when the weather forecast indicates daytime temperatures of at least 24 degrees Celsius.
During the season, the following operating times generally apply in normal operation:
- Niddapark and the forest play parks Louisa, Scheerwald, Schwanheim and Tannenwald: from 10 a.m. until around 6 p.m.
- Günthersburgpark: from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Lohrpark (paddling pool): is constantly running from mid-May to mid-September. However, it is currently being repaired due to vandalism, which is why it cannot be used for the time being.
Please find the current operating times of the water playgrounds on Spritziges Vergnügen - die WasserspielanlagenInternal Link.
For safety reasons, if showers or thunderstorms are forecast, the water facilities will not be put into operation even at short notice or, if they are in operation, will be switched off.
Due to the effort involved, it is then only possible to restart them the next day.
If the water play facilities are in operation, technical faults and/or staff shortages can lead to changes in operating times and early closure. Thank you for your understanding!
