How to search for and find a childcare place

Are you looking for a childcare place for your child? Here you will find the most important information and helpful addresses regarding childcare in Frankfurt am Main.

General Information

For years, the City of Frankfurt am Main has been working closely with various providers (municipal children's centres, denominational providers such as churches and religious communities, associations and parents' initiatives) to offer a comprehensive, diverse and high-quality range of education, care and upbringing for children of all ages.

There are currently over 54,000 childcare places available. Most of these are in over 870 day care centres. The portal kindernetfrankfurt.deExternal Link provides an overview and enables precise searches and online reservations for all city-funded childcare services.

Additionally, the City Education Authority (“Stadtschulamt”) qualifies and supports over 550 day carers who look particularly after the ‘little ones’ as day families. On top of this, crèches, kindergartens, after-school care centres, “Schülerläden” (schoolchildren’s centres) and extended school childcare centres offer a wide range of childcare and educational services.

"Infobörse Kindertagesbetreuung" Childcare Information Centre

Do I have any disadvantages in the allocation of childcare places if I re-register in December?

No.

The childcare places are allocated according to the Frankfurt admission criteria and not according to the time at which the reservation was made. Therefore, you do not have to register as early as possible in December.

What are the Frankfurt admission criteria?

KindernetfrankfurtExternal Link is a main reservation tool that supports daycare centre managers in finding places.

Places are allocated according to the circumstances of the individual case based on certain admission criteria (§24 Para. 1 SGB VIII).

The following are decisive:
- Are the legal guardians employed or are they in training/studying?
- Is the legal guardian a single parent?
- Does the family receive benefits/measures for integration into work within the meaning of the German Social Code (SGB II)?
- Does the child require special support (language, health and developmental support)?
- Is the family particularly burdened for other reasons (e.g. mental illness or addiction problems)?

The criteria are legally binding and guide the actions of all day care centres that receive financial support from the City Education Authority (“Stadtschulamt”).

In addition, depending on the provider, daycare centres can define further criteria for the allocation of their places:
- A balanced mix of ages and genders within a group;
- Siblings in the daycare centre;
- For denominational providers: membership of the church;
- Parents' particular willingness to get involved, depending on the concept of the daycare centre;

You can find out more about the criteria from the respective centre or on the provider's website.
