The Grand Bell Ringing of Frankfurt
A total of 50 bells of ten inner-city churches ring out in collective harmony for 30 minutes.
The Grand Bell Ringing of Frankfurt ("Das Große Stadtgeläute") of the inner-city churches has a long tradition in Frankfurt and is a cherished part of the festive season for many Frankfurt residents. It provides an opportunity to take pause for half an hour. Listening to the unique sound artwork, one becomes aware of the significance of the upcoming holidays.
The idea of the Grand Bell Ringing of Frankfurt dates back to the year 1954. The simultaneous ringing of all church bells in the city is documented as early as 1347. However, today's Grand Bell Ringing of Frankfurt is based on the harmonisation of the tonal disposition of all the churches involved. The bells of each participating church have their own harmony which fits perfectly into the joint chorus of all the church bells together.
