Death registration of foreign citizens

Registration of deaths is possible daily during the opening hours of the Registry Office (“Standesamt”). Outside opening hours, this is only possible after making an appointment by telephone.

For foreign nationals, we generally require the passport of the deceased and of the spouse.

Please note the following:
Translations of documents must be made according to ISO standards.

Was the deceased single?
We need the original:

• birth certificate with translation
• or an international certificate

Was the deceased married?
We need the original:

• marriage certificate with translation. If this certificate does not indicate dates and places of birth of the spouses, we also need a birth certificate of the deceased with translation or an international certificate.

Was the deceased widowed?
We need the original:

• marriage certificate and a death certificate with translations. If the marriage certificate does not indicate the date and place of birth of the deceased, we also need a birth certificate with translation or an international certificate.

Was the deceased divorced abroad?
We need the original:

• marriage certificate and a legally binding divorce decree with translations. The legal validity of the foreign divorce decree must be checked again in Germany. Experience has shown that this takes some time.

If the marriage certificate does not indicate the date and place of birth of the deceased, we also need a birth certificate with a translation or an international certificate.

Was the deceased naturalised?

We require further documents in addition to those already mentioned:

• the original certificate of naturalisation.
• If the name of the deceased was changed after naturalisation, we also need the original name declaration.

International repatriation:

In order to be able to repatriate a deceased person abroad, in addition to the certificates issued by us, you will also need:

• the clearance certificate (“Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung”) of a doctor.
