The PORTIKUS Frankfurt am Main is an exhibition hall for contemporary art.
The exhibition hall on the Main island shows current works by well-known artists and new, international productions by young creators of art. The Portikus is part of the University for Visual Arts – Städelschule (Hochschule für bildende Kunst – Städelschule). For this reason, it maintains an intensive exchange between visiting artists and students and the university. The Städelschule’s symposia, lectures and workshops are also presented here with the presentations.
The name refers to the remaining Portikus of the city library from 1825, which was destroyed in the Second World War. In 1987, a very simple but functional exhibition hall was built there. Since the reconstruction of the old library, the Portikus has found a temporary residence in the Frankfurt Leinwandhaus at Weckmarkt 17. With its new building on the Main island, designed by the architect Christoph Mäckler, it has finally found a stable and permanent home. With the same surface area as before, the building is now built much higher, so that now the possibility of double exhibitions can be considered. The close connection to the University for Visual Arts – Städelschule remains unchanged. In this way, the Portikus is able to define itself in a new, surprising way with each exhibition.
